Warzone is a Battle Royale game based on the Call of Duty franchise. It features 150 players fighting against each other, and the last survivor wins the match. Over time, more modes were added to offer different experiences to players.
It’s available on almost all platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Mobile (with a different version). The only major platform missing is the Nintendo Switch, although it may arrive one day.
The game was released on March 20, 2020, coinciding with the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, which helped it gain massive popularity quickly. It rapidly became a reference in its genre.
The Battle Royale mode was the first to be introduced, set in modern warfare where you fight to reach a Top 1 finish. Various maps were introduced, including the iconic Verdansk. However, the game lost a large portion of its community due to poor decisions by the studio. Warzone 2 was launched but didn’t meet expectations, and the Caldera map was widely criticized, leading to the game’s darkest period.
Thankfully, the developers took a step back, removed the “2” label, and returned to the roots that initially hooked so many players. Listening to the community helped bring the game back to life.
In Warzone, everything is allowed: you can camp, use vehicles, or play aggressively—anything goes as long as you survive and win.
Another mode is Plunder, which plays like a money-hunting competition on the same map. The team that collects the most cash wins. It’s widely used by players who don’t own multiplayer to level up their weapons and remain competitive.
In Plunder, respawn is unlimited until the end. There are no constraints or specific rules—just pure chaos as everyone rushes in to collect money.
Now, let’s talk about the most played and most loved mode: Resurgence. It takes place on a smaller map, offering fast-paced, action-packed gameplay with no downtime. Here, 100 players battle to be the last standing.
This mode already features four unique maps:
- Rebirth Island: The most iconic and most played map across all seasons. Inspired by Alcatraz prison, players must escape or be forever trapped on the island.
- Fortune’s Keep: A refreshing addition with its fortress and Pacific island vibe. The map is rich in style, and scattered secrets make it especially interesting. Updates have significantly altered parts of it.
- Ashika Island: Set in a feudal Japanese theme—an excellent, well-designed map.
- Vondel: A European-inspired urban map, diverse and dynamic.
There are also fun, limited-time modes with zombies or alternative rules. These lighter modes brought much-needed variety and casual fun to the game.
Some were so popular they stayed longer. Every season brings new themed modes to enhance player experience.
You can’t talk about Warzone without mentioning the "meta" system, which frustrates many players. Certain weapons get powerful buffs just as they’re released in expensive bundles, encouraging players to spend.
That said, you’re free to play however you want—with ground loot or your own loadouts, with or without killstreaks. The only real limits are your own skill compared to stronger opponents.
The game suffers from a lack of communication, though the developers have clearly made efforts to maintain the community and evolve from a classic Battle Royale into a true competitor.
Bit by bit, it’s becoming a major reference in the genre, unmatched by any other title.
This entire phenomenon almost ended with the shift to Modern Warfare 3, but disaster was avoided by focusing on what players wanted—prioritizing the game over profit.
There’s also a unique system in place: each year, a different studio takes the lead on content—Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer rotate every three years.
Everything began with Infinity Ward... and nearly ended with them too. But the project now seems stable, and the decisions appear to be focused on pushing the game in the right direction.
It’s not perfect, but Warzone still has many strong years ahead, offering regular events with plenty of free rewards and guides to help you complete tasks faster.
